RE: Summer Academic Responsibilities for English

Dear Parents,

Reading, and all of the various processes involved, is an important intellectual labor that can serve as a gateway to developing a life of independent learning. As students read, they improve their reading speed, vocabulary, comprehension, and the analytical and interpretative skills necessary for success in their future English classes, college entrance exams, post-secondary education, and the work place. They also increase their attention span and improve their ability to recognize proper grammar usage.

St. Scholastica Academy’s Summer English Program serves a twofold purpose. It will help our students foster sound reading habits and introduce them to the English literature material they will encounter in their upcoming school year. Each novel is accompanied by a pre-writing packet. The assigned written packets are designed to introduce our students to "writing as a process” and involve them in exercises that will serve as a basis for classroom discussion and collaboration in developing a well written essay.

Your daughter will be asked to participate in SSA’s English Summer Program. Please partner with your daughter this summer to ensure that this assignment is completed prior to beginning school in August. She will be asked to turn in her summer reading assignment on Monday, August 16th during homeroom.

If you have any questions regarding this program, please feel free to email Jennifer Grimley at jgrimley@ssacad.com

Sincerely,

Jennifer Grimley
Dean of Academics

Math Summer Program as per the Math Department:

First, all SSA students have the good fortune to be able to access the TCA Online Study guide software to help them review material that they will need to know in order to increase their performance on the ACT test. We highly recommend that all students take advantage of this opportunity and continue to use the program during the summer months. Included in this mailing is a list of concepts for each math course taught at SSA this year. Your daughter should work through all of the concepts that are specific to the math course she took this year. Once a concept is selected from the software program, she should read through the tutorial that accompanies the concept and then take the quiz that follows the tutorial. The math department feels that working with these skills and brushing up on test-taking strategies are essential for improving ACT scores.

Second, we want our students to maintain their knowledge of the math concepts they learned this year and will need to use again next year. To this end, we have posted problems for each math course that will be offered next year. Students should spend some quality time working on the problems listed under the math course she will take next year. Solving these problems will enable your daughter to review specific concepts that will better prepare her for her next math course.

Since the program is designed to provide additional structured practice in math and to reinforce learned concepts and ACT test taking skills, the math department has decided that the summer math work will not be graded. However, our expectation is that students will have practiced and mastered these reviewed skills before beginning their next math course.

Furthermore, because the math teachers are committed to helping your daughters succeed in their math class and improve their ACT score, each department member will be at school one day during the summer. If your daughter wants to review any of the work she has done during the summer, she can attend one or more of these optional sessions. Students can attend any of the help sessions since all teachers can assist with all problems. The date and time for each teacher is listed below.

Directions for Using the Software:
  1. Enter your user information into the Coach software.
  2. Select Studyguide for ACT.
  3. Choose "My Status for ACT.” This will display your testing results for the diagnostic test(s) your daughter has taken in August of each year.
  4. Click on Step 4 "Review Your Skills” on the navigation bar to the left.
  5. Select All Math Lessons.
  6. You may select each concept by clicking on it.
  7. Read the tutorials for each of the selected concepts and take the quiz that follows each tutorial.
  8. If you choose to work on your particular critical skills, go to Step 4 "Review Your Skills” and click on Critical Skills.
  9. Select the diagnostic test you are interested in reviewing. Begin to work on the identified skills by going through the links outlined in your critical skills report textbox.
  10. Take the skill quizzes making sure to read the "hints” and "explanations” for each exercise. This is going to help you build the skills that you are weakest in so that you may raise your overall test score.
  11. Once you’ve finished reviewing your critical skills, you can now work on test-taking strategies by clicking on "Test Taking Strategies."
If you have any questions regarding this assignment or have any trouble accessing the online software, do not hesitate to email Ms. Grimley at jgrimley@ssacad.com.
